3 Tests to Identify Engagement Rings with Fake Diamonds
It is a fact that there are a lot of engagement rings with fake diamonds out there these days. Although they look much similar to real diamonds, the center stone in such fake rings are usually removable and loosely mounted. Worry not, however; you can test whether your engagement ring has a fake stone by using any one of the following tests.
The Water Test
Drop your ring’s loose stone into a glass of water. If the diamond sinks instantly, then you have got a real diamond. Yet, if it does not sink quickly or floats, it might be a fake diamond. Note that stones like moissanite and zirconia sink easily too, so you need to carry out more tests to confirm.
Yet another way to spot fake diamonds is to hold the loose stone with tweezers and heat it over a candle flame for 30 to 45 seconds. Then, drop the stone into a glass of icy water. A real diamond will not respond to the extreme change in temperature, while fake diamonds would shatter or break.
