How the GIA Grades a Stone
The GIA uses a computer that runs a simulation of a three-dimensional structure of a flawless, brilliant, and colorless diamond with fifty-eight facets. The diamond is completely symmetric as well as polished to perfection. Further, they introduce eight-cut parameters that are pivotal in determining the interaction between the diamond and light.
The GIA conducted several computer simulations to study the brilliance and the individual factors responsible for the stone’s sparkle. It revealed that the type of cut, as well as physical attributes, could modify the brilliance of a diamond. The study even found that the American ideal cut produced some of the least brilliant diamonds.
