Endeavors for Responsible Diamond Mining

Endeavors for Responsible Diamond Mining

Each of the 2 karat diamond rings created from mined gemstones has a great impact on the Earth’s balance. Hence, it is high time that responsible mining is implemented worldwide.

Diamond mining is less lethal when compared to activities like gold mining. The latter involves the use of toxic chemicals which are absent in diamond mining. Still, there are certain risks involved in diamond mining; yet these can be mitigated by adopting appropriate planning and regulation. Below are a few endeavors by different authorities towards more eco-friendly diamond mining.

  • The Canadian Arctic has diamond mines in a fragile ecosystem. However, the region is well protected to minimize environmental risks. Similar stories can be heard from Botswana and Namibia.
  • It is possible to restore the regions depleted by diamond mining. Countries like Botswana, Canada, and Namibia have already scheduled the restoration program to commence when the mining activity comes to a close.

  • In the case of Sierra Leone, where lands were in severe disrepair, a great improvement has been seen in its resources as a result of the collective effort of restoration.
