GIA Has News about Blue Diamonds
If you have paid attention to the science side of it, you probably know that the color of these stones owes to Boron being present inside them in varying degrees. Up until now though, scientists had no idea where it came from. That made an antique blue diamond ring, about the most mysterious jewel on the planet in terms of origin.
Boron-bearing diamonds are devoid of inclusions, which meant little could be learned even if you laid hands on one, which in itself was hard, and still is. Despite that, new tests have pointed to the Boron possibly having come from the oceans, and then attaching chemically to the rocks. These, in turn, got buried deep under the earth, even as low as the lower mantle.
This does make things more complicated for the sciencey types. For the consumer, it just goes to show that blue diamonds contain Boron that may have been part of a huge water body, way back when. In other words, the stone they admire or own contains a part of the ocean by extension.
