How Pure is White Gold?

How Pure is White Gold?

Many people wonder if their white gold jewelry will have the same value as yellow gold; it will.

How it is Made

In order to make white gold, white metals like silver, nickel, and palladium are mixed with pure gold to create an alloy. That means 14k white gold and 18k white gold are 58.3% gold and 75% gold respectively. Both of these have a yellowish tint to them, which is why it is necessary to coat plate them with rhodium for a brilliant white luster, such as in a 1-carat marquise diamond ring. 19k white gold can dispense with that need because its color is naturally white.

Gold Content

White gold contains the same amount of pure gold as its rose gold or yellow gold counterparts. This means a 14k white gold diamond ring will have the same percentage of gold as a 14k yellow gold diamond ring. The more the karat measure, the purer the gold will be.
