Repairing Scratches and Chips in Diamonds

Re-polishing and re-cutting are two of the commonly available options, but first, you need to know it will work right.

Any stone large enough for the affected area to be removed completely can be repaired. Economically though, you may want to give it further thought before jumping in. A re-polishing job is usually meant to retouch a second-hand diamond, although even chipped diamonds can be re-polished. This does remove some of the carat weight, but compared to the damage itself, this is generally small.

Removing an inclusion that is located close to the diamond’s surface is something best approached with care. Sometimes, a total redesign may be required, and you may end up losing a lot of the stone’s original value. However, if you are able to get a better clarity rating on the other side, it is totally worth it. Anyway, this is better than having to buy a new diamond ring to replace your flawed one.
