The History and Symbolism of Claddagh Rings

A Claddagh ring has an appealing design with a lot of symbolism. A Claddagh ring is shaped as though it features two hands, a love symbol and a crown set above the heart. Often these design elements are shaped from a precious metal in order to create an arresting yet traditional look.

Claddagh rings originate from an ancient Irish town of the same name, now forming a part of the Galway city. The person who invented the design for Claddagh rings is still a mystery; however, an Irish goldsmith named Bartholomew Fallon seems to be the one behind Claddagh rings’ earliest examples.

Yet again, these rings have a Roman inspiration. The people of Rome developed the tradition of gifting friends with fede rings as symbols of friendship. The word stands for ‘mani in fede’, and it is believed that Roman fede rings that symbolized clasped hands, and at times holding hearts, were the inspiration behind the Claddagh rings. The fede rings were mostly made of gold, and yellow gold is the traditional metal choice for Irish Claddagh rings too.

Today, you can find Claddagh ring with diamonds or other gemstones, and even customize one as per your needs. Giving a loved one the Irish ring with birthstone worked into its design is an ideal way to express how much he or she means to you.
