The color of a diamond makes it worth more (technically, the colorlessness does). However, there are few visible differences between grades G and H, or between grades I and J. The diamond most people search for lands in the J to F range. - Try buying a stone of 0.90 carats instead of 1 carat, or a 0.45 carat instead of 0.50 carat. This will save you thousands of dollars.
- When buying a solitaire diamond that is below 1 carat in weight, clarity does not count for much. The color and the cut are more influential on how brilliant the stone looks. This means you should not waste time on an excessively clear gem when that makes no noticeable difference.
- Round shaped solitaires may be expensive, but they can hide yellow tinges and imperfections quite well.
- Choose a metal of the right color to go with your precious stone, so that its sparkle gets set off in the best possible way.
